Car preparation for a long journey
Any motorist embarking on a long journey will hold concerns about vehicle reliability. If they have a family they may also be concerned about how to keep them entertained. In order to have a successful journey a little advance planning is recommended.
Mechanical considerations when planning a long journey
It is foolhardy to undertake a long journey in a vehicle that is not properly prepared. A mechanical breakdown can not only cause delays and stress, it can be a safety issue depending where you break down. There are several things to consider:
- Have you had a current service? Every car requires regular servicing to ensure reliable use. During a service you mechanic will be able to see if any parts are due to be replaced
- Do you have good tyres and a wheel alignment? Tyres are the part of the car that connects with the road so it makes sense that they have to be in the best condition in order to maximise safe driving
- Do you have the right tyres for the job? Different driving conditions sometimes require different types of tyres so it is wise to seek expert advice
- Have you checked the really basic things such as oil and water? Even if you've had a regular service this is recommended because faults with retention of oil and water are the major cause of mechanical breakdown and can happen without much warning
- Do all the lights, windscreen wipers and so forth work? Check the indicators and brake lights
- Is the car making any unusual noises? If it is then get a mechanical check-up
- Is it steering truly? If you have any doubts get it checked
- The same with brakes, if they appear to be pulling up slowly of if you find that when you brake the car judders or is pulled to the left or right, there could be a problem
If you do all these things and have a reliable mechanic, your trip should be a success at least in terms of not having a breakdown. It always pays however to have a roadside assist package in place so that you don't get stuck. Your state motoring body usually can provide these and it just gives you the peace of mind of knowing that if a problem does occur, you won't be stranded as these services include a visit by a mobile mechanic or towing if required.
Other preparations for a long journey
You may also want to consider entertainment. This may include scheduling stops at places your passengers may find interesting, and having onboard entertainment in the form of games, music playing equipment or even DVD players. The main thing to consider if you choose this, is that loose objects in a car's cabin can kill at even relatively low impact speeds, so everything must be secured using manufacturer approved equipment. A lot of people overlook peripherals such as DVD cases, iPods and so forth and although it is unlikely a stray object in a crash can move at surprising speed and cause injury or even death. It pays to get advice on how best to set up your onboard entertainment equipment. If you do all this your journey will be stress free, safe and enjoyable.
